The Ideal 6-Day Marrakech Desert Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival - Exploring Marrakech with a local guide

This 6-day Morocco tour starts in Marrakech, the capital of tourism in Morocco. First, we will pick you up from the airport or your hotel. Depending, on if you arrive early, you will have a local guide who will take you around the main attractions of the city, most of which are in the Madina (old city). This includes the unique Djemaa el-Fnaa square, the beating heart of Marrakech. A marketplace where you can see street performers, snake charmers, food stalls, and a live atmosphere. Going deeper into the square, you will explore the colorful souks (markets). Also, you will visit the nearby Koutoubia Mosque, the biggest in the city.

The local guided trip is mostly done on foot; the guide will take you to visit interesting attractions like the Bahia and Badi palaces. Both sites are known for their exquisite decorations—old walls, colorful painted cedar ceilings, and beautiful courtyards. Moreover, you will visit the interesting Madrasa of Ben Youssef, which was once an Islamic teaching center.

After discovering the Madina, we will move on to a new city to see the Garden of Majorelle: a vibrant botanical garden and artist’s creation in Marrakech.

You will have free time to explore the city’s unique nightlife in the evening. Go upstairs to one of the cafes and enjoy a drink while watching the square.

Day 2: Marrakech – Atlas Mountains – Ait Benhaddou – Dades Gorges

After having breakfast in the hotel, we’ll continue our 6-day Morocco tour from Marrakech. Firstly, we will drive through the charming High Atlas mountains. If you are traveling in winter, it gets more beautiful with snow-capped peaks. Along the road, enjoy the view of the small Berber villages made of mudbrick houses.

On the way up the mountains,  we can stop for a break and visit a local cooperative where Berber women make argan oil. It can be used for cooking and body care! After that, we take the curvy road of Tichka Pass filled with incredible views. Next, we‘ll stop at the highest point of the road at an altitude of 2260m.

Afterwards, we continue driving to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Ben Haddou. A well-preserved fortified village featured in many Hollywood movies and TV series like Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Game Of Thrones. You will have time to do some hiking to explore the Kasbah and learn about its history. The next stop is another town known as the Hollywood of Africa, Ouarzazate! Here, you can have a local guided tour inside one of the Atlas Studios to discover where they make movies.

Our adventure continues through the road of a Thousand Kasbahs and the Valley of the Roses. Finally,  we’ll reach Boumalne Dades, a charming town right by the Dades River. Check in at the hotel and relax.

Day 3: Dades Gorges – Todra Gorges - Merzouga - Camel Trekking - Camping

Today’s adventure takes us even further into the desert! We’ll be driving east until we reach a huge area of sandy hills called Erg Chebbi, near a town called Merzouga. Along the way, we’ll make a stop at the lovely oasis town of Tinerhir or Tinghir.

The beauty of nature here is unlike any other place in Morocco; green oases, old mud houses, and thousands of palm trees! Not far from this place, we will visit Todra Gorges. A very deep canyon in the red-yellow high Atlas mountains. It’s nearly 300 m deep! As with any other attraction, you will have some free time to explore the area and do some hiking through the gorges.

After a good hike, it is time for lunch to fuel up and restore our energy. Then, our next destination is Erfoud, a town famous for its interesting fossils. Here, we’ll visit a workshop where craftsmen create amazing things from the fossils they find in the area. Take the examples of furniture stuff like tables and sinks to small souvenir items (souvenirs) like camels and jewelry boxes.

As we approach Merzouga, the closest town to the Sahara Desert in Morocco, we’ll pass through Hassi Labied. This town is famous for having a big Oasis.

Finally, we’ll reach the edge of the enormous Erg Chebbi sand dunes. Here, we’ll leave our car behind and switch to a more traditional way of traveling in the desert – camels! We’ll ride them across the golden sand dunes to our camp, set up in the style of the Bedouin tents. Arriving at the camp, you can take the sandboards and climb the nearby dunes. Imagine doing sandboarding and watching the sunset at the same time! Finally, we’ll enjoy an authentic dinner, and get around a campfire listening to traditional desert music.

Day 4: Exploring the Sahara Desert

Waking up early in the desert is recommended. The stunning sunrise over the golden dunes is worth it. After this magical sight, head back to the camp for breakfast, and enjoy the last moments in the desert while having a tasty meal.

After that, you can choose whether to take a camel ride back on the same path as the day before or take the 4×4 instead. Today is all about exploring the hidden gems of the Merzouga desert! This place has a variety of landscapes – from huge sand dunes to secret lakes, interesting mines, fossil fields, and beautiful oases. Get ready for an offroading desert adventure!

First, we’ll head off-road to visit an old Mascara mine, a special part of Merzouga’s past. Then, we will go on a journey to meet the Berber nomads and get a glimpse into their lifestyle. After a drive through this community, we can pay a visit to one of the families drink some tea, and discover their traditions and how they survive in this harsh climate.

Next, we will head to the village of Khamlia, where we’ll get to see the Gnaoua people. We can get into one of their entertaining centers, called Dar Gnaoua to enjoy their music and spirited dance performances!

After all the excitement, it is time for an authentic lunch. Get ready to try the Berber Pizza! Then, we’ll drive to the Oases of Hassi Labied, take a walk through its beautiful palm grove, and learn about the irrigation system. Finally, we will drop you off at the hotel. You will have free time to sit by the swimming pool or even climb the dunes once again to see the sunset.

Day 5: Merzouga - Rissani - Ziz Valley - Cedar Forest - Ifrane - Fes

We’ll say goodbye to the desert and leave for the spiritual city of Fes! Our first stop is Rissani, the ancient capital of Tafilalet. “This tour was perfect and exceeded our expectations! We went for 6 days from Marrakech to Fes, stopping in amazing places and spending two nights in the Sahara desert under the stars was a magic experience. Hassan, our driver, was the best and made our trip special: he explained so many things, and he had an answer and a solution for everything. He was fun and kind. And he made satisfied all our requests even if was about unplanned things and stops along the way! We highly recommend him as your driver and guide. We couldn’t ask for a better experience! “My husband and I had the best time with Hassan and Youssef. They are a great team, so polite and with excellent English. They stopped at tons of great places along the way, and they were so welcoming and friendly. Youssef is an awesome driver (this felt huge given some of my other experiences in cars in Marrakech!!) and Hassan knows so much about the region. Also, the desert tour was lovely- the accommodations were clean and far exceeded expectations. The camels looked healthy and taken care of (this was important to me) This was well worth it and highly recommend it.”
