Here are the tour highlights:
Our 4-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour departs from your hotel at 8:00 AM. Along the way to Merzouga, you will explore interesting sites. Firstly, you will visit Ifrane, Morocco’s cleanest city, famous for its Atlas Lion statue. Secondly, you will head to the Cedar Forest to discover unique Barbary Macaque monkeys.
After lunch, you will visit the Ziz Valley near Errachidia. It is famous for its palm trees and is considered one of the biggest sources of dates in Morocco.
Around 4:00 or 5:00 PM, you will arrive at the Merzouga desert. Prepare for the amazing views of the golden sand dunes of Erg Chebbi before we take you to relax at the riad. Check-in and prepare for your exploration of the surroundings the next day.
On the second day of your desert tour from Fes to Marrakech, you will discover the most interesting sites around Merzouga. To start with, you will visit the Morocco National 4×4 Auto Museum to see cool 4x4s and racing cars, including some used by Moroccan royalty. Then, we’ll take you to Khamlia, where you can listen to Gnawa music. They are originally from the southern part of Africa and play a unique genre of music known as Gnawa.
After visiting the small town of Khamlia, you will be driving off-road to the mine of Mifis, an abandoned town with Galena mines where mascara was made from this material in the past. About 10 minutes from there, you will visit one of the Berber families who live in tents. You will get to know them, see how they live in these tents, and have a glass of tea with them.
In the afternoon, you will visit one of the small oases, where you will see a traditional irrigation system called foggara. This network of underground canals taps into water sources deep beneath the desert, bringing life to the otherwise arid landscape.
Eventually, we will take you to start the camel ride, crossing the sand dunes for about an hour. You can either stop along the way to watch the sunset or when you arrive at the camp. At night, the camp staff will entertain you by playing drums before they show you the best dunes to watch the stars.
We leave the desert after breakfast at the camp and head to Rissani town, once the capital of Tafilalet. Rissani is still a major trade hub, and its bustling marketplace is especially busy on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. We will explore the Rissani Souk for a while before we continue our way.
Next, we drive to the Todra Gorges, passing through the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad. The Todra River carved a big canyon through the mountains, with high red cliffs on both sides. Rock climbers travel to these valleys. Feel free to walk around and enjoy the scenery. We will have some free time for lunch somewhere along the way.
Finally, we will head to Boumalne Dades, where we will spend the night.
The road of 1000 Kasbahs and the Rose Valley will take us to Ouarzazate today. You can go inside the Atlas Studios or just take pictures from the outside. Then we will visit the Ait Ben Hadou Kasbah, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is where many famous movies and TV shows were filmed, including Gladiator, Prince of Persia, and Game of Thrones.
Eventually, we will get to Marrakech after two short stops: one at Tizi n’Tichka, the highest mountain pass in North Africa, with an elevation of 2,260 meters (7,418 feet), and one at the Argan Oil Cooperative (optional). After taking you to your hotel in Marrakech, our 4-day desert tour from Fes comes to an end.
“Awesome experience through the Moroccan desert! We did the famous 4-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour. It was very cool to drive through and have some scenic views of the Atlas Mountains on the first day. Solid camel riding experience through the dunes in Merzouga. Also, it was very nice to watch the sunset while doing a little bit of sandboarding. The offroading trip was something unique we had. Not to mention the tour guide, who was super fun and hospitable! Great trip! Highly recommended!”
“Honestly, this was the most surreal experience of my life. I never would have thought of being in the dunes in the Sahara, and I loved every moment. The camel and optional ATVs were the highlights. We got to experience the desert at its best. Our driver, Youssef, was amazing and could communicate in 5 different languages. He was really funny and good to talk to, and I learned a lot. I would recommend this 4-day desert tour from Fes as a whole to everyone. Don’t forget to ask for Youssef; you will not regret it!”
